Monological rhetorical genres

Address

The address is a rhetorical monologue genre and it is delivered in different cases. One group includes official celebrations of institutions, events, award ceremonies; celebrations of anniversaries and many more. The second group of cases are domestic events: engagements, weddings, anniversaries, funerals and much more. The address is in accordance with the purpose of the event or ceremony and it can be an address at the opening and an address at the closing word. The address can be grateful, congratulatory, etc. Receiving awards during the Academy Awards ceremony involves the pronunciation of such speeches.

Greeting Address

The greeting / salutatory address or speech has a moderate frequency of use. This is because in order to have a rhetorical communicative situation, the necessary conditions are a significant occasion (anniversary, professional, national holiday, successfully completed milestone, important decision, etc.). Synonyms of congratulatory address are congratulatory speech, welcoming speech. A possible variant is a farewell speech or farewell address. With some convention, a variant could be a speech at graduation from high school or university. In the USA it is known as a commencement speech and has a solid tradition, video recordings are uploaded to the websites of academic institutions. Some of the famous ones are those of Steve Jobs’ address to Stanford University students and Kurt Vonnegut’s address to Massachusetts Institute of Technology students.

Lecture

The lecture is a rhetorical genre and it has a tradition in the academic and public spheres. The lecture can be a stand-alone unit or part of a conference scenario. The lecture can be part of an academic course during university education. The lecture can be an integral part of seminars, conferences, round tables, congresses, etc.

Speech

The speech is a traditional rhetorical genre. Speeches are delivered in front of different audiences and they are referred to monological genres. The functions of a speech are to inform, to present, to persuade, to describe a situation, to present results of analysis, etc. Speeches also have the functions of congratulating, thanking, inspiring, motivating, criticising, etc. The term speech refers to:

1. Parliament. It is a speech made by the parliamentary speaker in the plenary chamber during debates, in parliamentary committees or by a president in the discharge of his duties and powers in parliament. In Great Britain, the so-called king’s speech is delivered in Parliament. In Bulgaria, when it was a monarchy, the throne speech was delivered by the king;

2. A speech is a kind of participation of politicians and representatives of institutions in party and public forums, speech at party congresses and conferences, etc.

3. A speech is delivered by executives at business and public events;

4. Diplomats also have the opportunity to deliver speeches during conferences, negotiations, events;

5. Representatives of academic institutions deliver speeches during the formal parts of scientific events, conferences, ceremonies, etc.

Statement

The term statement is a part of the categorial-conceptual apparatus of rhetoric. A statement is sometimes taken in practice as a synonym or variant of a formal institutional speech or address. The statement is delivered by presidents (a head of the state), prime ministers, presidents of parliaments of international institutions, top managers of business organizations, etc.

Report

The report is a genre widely applicable in contemporary rhetorical practices. The report is an important part of business meetings, business conferences, congresses, etc. The report is actively used by institutions, business organisations, university management, government institutions, NGOs, etc. It is a monological rhetorical genre. The report has informational, organisational, business, predictive, instructive and emotional functions. Depending on their purpose and the organisation of the material in them, reports are divided into: a report containing the results of analyses; a report containing an evaluation – with a variant of a monitoring report; a project report; a report presenting ideas and proposals, etc.

Video lecture

The video lecture is a relatively new rhetorical genre, but it has already established itself. It has traditions in academic education and in the public sphere. Most often, the video lecture is a part of the academic course during university education. Some of the popular video lecture platforms are Coursera, MOOCs, etc. The lecture can be an integral part of seminars, conferences, roundtables, congresses, etc.

Utterance

The term utterance is a part of the rhetorical terminology. The utterance is often taken as a genre of an operational nature and is part of conferences, meetings, assemblies, round tables, discussions, disputations, etc. Utterances are made by participants in these formats, and they follow ethics, rules, time constraints, etc. and present specific information, results of analyses, or they make suggestions, etc.
